John 1 ‘“ I have always loved the revelation of the Word, the revealing, the opening of our eyes to who He is, in this chapter:
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. (John 1:1-5)
I am amazed at the blessing I get from thinking about how the Word transforms. The Word proceeded from the mouth of God, and from this, from God’s Word, light was created, and in creating something out of nothing, the Word of God became “light”, and that Light” became a word, as a name was given:
And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” And there was evening, and there was morning the first day. (Gen 1:3-5)
Light was the first thing God created and one of the first characteristics John gave us to describe Jesus. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it (John 1:4-5). At the beginning, at the Genesis of everything we know, God separated the light from the darkness and the darkness did not overcome it. The light was more powerful than the dark. Darkness is nothing on its own; even its definition is found in another entity, light. Darkness: the partial or total absence of light (thanks wiki!). Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12).
