I loved reading this portion of the chapter on Jehovah Jireh. KA shares with us that the literal translation of Jireh is “to see” and that He is Jehovah Jireh – the God who sees and foresees the needs of His people and then out of His great compassion, provides. I love that praise song – Jehovah Jireh, my Provider, His grace is sufficient for me, for me, for me…We must remember that He sees all of our needs and provides for us (all day, every day); and He has provided what it is that we really need, though sometimes He does not provide what we want. Like any good Father, God knows what is best and gives us the life, the circumstances, the family, the house, the job…that will accomplish His work in us.
Of course, most importantly, He provided for us our only hope of salvation and reconciliation by giving His Son as a sacrifice for us, to redeem us, to ransom us from death. I have heard it said that if salvation was God’s only design for our lives then we would be whisked off to heaven as soon as we accepted Jesus as our Lord and Savior. But instead, He keeps us here…in this messy and difficult world to work out [our] salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in [us] to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose (Phil 2:12-13). It is a marvel…the way He weaves together the tapestry of our lives. Every wrong turn, every failure, every regret – is not wasted. God is able to use them and to use us, broken though we are, to accomplish His will. Yes, He has a will and purpose. He sees. He provides. We who love Him are never out of His sight or His hand. His will for us is perfect, His choices for us are for our good rather than our pleasure, and His provision for us comes out of His great love for us.
