I asked Sarah to tell me about how she started her soap-making business and she told me how God brought big change to her life when she embraced a new role as a stay-at-home-mom in this post. Following God’s plan for her has taught Sarah more about Who He is. With Psalm51Soap, Sarah honors the changes God can bring in our hearts. Today, she shares the scriptures that inspire her, with us!
Sarah’s Inspiration:
- “God created man in His own image, the image of God. He created him; male and female, He created them” (Genesis 1:27). God is the ultimate creator. We are made in His image, so if He is a creator, then so are we!
- “And He has filled them with the Spirit of God, with skill, with intelligence, with knowledge, and with all craftsmanship, to devise artistic designs … for every skilled craft” (Exodus 35:31-33). God gifts each of His children with His Holy Spirit, and with skills, intelligence, knowledge, and craftsmanship Anything we possess is a gift from our Father in Heaven. My husband and I were discussing recently that craft doesn’t have to be literal; it’s what you create with your hand, skills, etc. For my husband, law is his craft. Coming up with complex arguments for his clients is his creation. Nurturing our children, and serving other mothers and their children, is my craft. It just so happens I often use actual crafts towards that end! Both are important and are what God has equipped us to do.
- “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do” (Ephesians 2:10). We are created to do good works with whatever skills God has equipped us and He prepared us in advance for the skills or gifts He gave, so rather than fight against them or ignore them, let’s embrace and use them according to His purpose.
- “Whatever you do, do your work heartily, as for the Lord rather than for men” (Colossians 3:23). We are not working for the approval of others, which is a hard concept to grasp and accept as moms. We are working for Him and He sees the fruits of our labor.
- “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:14-16). As mothers, we are the light of our homes. We are in a position to be able to show light to our husbands, our children, and anyone we invite into our homes and lives through our words, actions, and the examples we set for others. Our light is not meant to be hidden, but rather we are to use our gifts according to God’s will, so that we may glorify him.
My name is Sarah, but these days I mostly answer to “Mommy.” I am lucky to be married to my husband James, whose love, wit, and humor keep me going regardless of what life throws at us. We have 2 beautiful daughters, Macy and Riley. I am a lawyer, turned stay-at-home-mom, turned soap-maker/business owner (read about my journey here).
Admittedly, I am one of “those” moms—the annoying ones who theme everything and cut all food into shapes, whose walls are overflowing with handprint crafts, and who actually attempt to make 99% of everything I pin on Pinterest. I can honestly say I never pictured myself becoming her, before I had kids, but I have since embraced this part of myself and use it as a ministry to other moms and their children.
I usually host several playdates a week for 20+ moms and their kids, and, having been the new mom with no mom-friends, it is my mission to help other moms and their children feel welcomed and included. When I am not playing with my kids or making soap, I can be found reading, crafting, avoiding doing laundry, or dreaming up ways to convince my hubby to move to London, my favorite city in the world.
