Walking Through the Christian Year

The Christian Year?

Growing up a military kid and being a military wife means that I have been on the move most of my life.  In all of this sojourning, I have experienced many, many different churches.  Some followed the church calendar (observing the seasons of the church like Advent and Lent throughout the year) and some have not.

Now my family and I attend a church that does not follow the church calendar.  In chats with our wonderful pastor, he has encouraged us to celebrate the liturgical seasons at home, as a family. Liturgical means “related to worship.” I am so excited to share our journey with you, here.

Why will we walk through the Christian year?

So much of our how we mark our time is influenced by the world that we live in: the school calendar, Federal Holidays, cultural celebrations, personal milestones, even retail seasons.  This year we hope to mark the passage of time by reading through scriptures that point to the Gospel and reflecting on how Jesus has changed history and each of us individually.  We want to intentionally remember, and experience, God’s continually unfolding story in our everyday lives.

How will we walk through the Christian Year?

We will read scripture in a way that follows, chronologically, the events of Jesus’ life and the beginning of the Early Church.  Our family will celebrate these holidays (holy-days) with family activities to increase their meaning to us. We hope to enter into the scripture in an experiential way (by hearing and doing), and pass this on to our children. We also hope to make some great memories and develop family traditions that point back to Christ.

If you are here then you have already joined me on this journey!  You are either: (1) curious to learn more by following our story, (2) planning to jump in with us, or (3) already on the road and we are joining you.  The links below will show you more about how you can participate alongside us.  Many resources and pages will be added as we journey on.  Updates to this page will be sent out in newsletters to come. Please let me know if you have something I can share with others!

When the first day of school is also the day your When the first day of school is also the day your firstborn drives herself to college, it’s a lot. We moved her stuff into her dorm last week. Today she got up early to say goodbye to Dad (too early! Not pictured 😂), her brother, her doggo, her piano, and her momma. Before she left, she made blueberry scones to share with her little bro @sjoshlafont —they homeschool and relocated together, went to @westminsteroakmtn together, and have shared a love of music, Legos, superheroes (and villains), Transformers, and so much more. She played my favorite song. She even made banana bread to bring to her new roomie. @graciethenerd You are my little nut brown hare, and I love you to the moon and back. Auburn University is a better place because you are there! ❤️
